RTw 08/21 0934 BRITISH BOOKMAKER SHORTENS ODDS ON LITTLE GREEN MEN

LONDON (Reuter) - So many people have wagered that aliens from outer space

will visit earth that a leading firm of British bookmakers have cut the odds

against it happening.

Bookmakers William Hill said Saturday the company would have to pay out

more than $1.5 million if aliens did show up.

To reduce its potential liabilities the company has put a 33 to one upper

limit on odds on all bets over $150. Gamblers used to be able to get odds of

500 to one that it would some day be proved earthlings are not alone in the

universe.

Graham Sharpe, who works out the odds for William Hill, said bets on

aliens have long been among the most popular unusual bets bookmakers take,

rivalling wagers on the existence of the Loch Ness monster in Scotland.

"If a UFO turns up piloted by the Loch Ness monster we will be in double

big trouble," Sharpe said.
