The subject of UFOS and the skeptical community's approach to Ufology has been debated in the past on the Skeptic Discussion Group, a mailing list available through the INTERNET: listserv@jhuvm.hcf.jhu.edu.
The following is part of a thread in which I was involved in that was posted to the list in August-September 1993. What I will be posting focuses on THE SKEPTICAL INQUIRER and its treatment of Ufology. People interested in the _full_ thread with its many diverse viewpoints can avail themselves of it by requesting the above monthly archives from the address above. Information on how to join the list is posted periodically to sci.skeptic by the list owner, Taner Edis: owner-skeptic@jhuvm.hcf.jhu.edu.

To set the record straight, I have never been involved in a seven year dialog with Rick Moen, but life is not over with yet. (GRIN)
Rick Moen responds to Emmanuel Marin as such:
> EM--I personally think that the lack of interest of the US > scientific community in Ufology is really of interest.
RM--Then you're barking up the wrong tree. Yelling at skeptics, who make it their _hobby_ to consider evidence for fringe-science claims, is hardly the way to get working scientists, who by and large will not give fringe-science claims the time of day, to change their minds. Skeptics may not always be consistent in their attention to interesting claims, they may be often unfair and sometimes insulting, but at least they try, spottily and occasionally. It's the scientists you want to talk to, then. It's not skeptics' fault if the latter aren't listening. We simply print analyses and commentary on interesting claims that particular writers submit, and that seem printable.
When I ask myself where do scientists interested in fringe claims go to for information, the answer is not the scientific journals but that part of the media that proclaims to print reliable information on fringe claims of which the skeptics' journals claim to be. So it appears to me that in a medium such as this, one can find the audience that Emmanuel is looking for --- namely scientists interested in fringe claims. But I am particularly interested in what kind of analyses and commentary an interested scientist would find in the skeptical literature? I will attempt to answer that shortly.
> EM--A responsible scientist should gather data before expressing > a judgement. Alas, the information that comes from the most > reliable source (i.e. : the skeptics) are biased towards the > "explained" cases, while you very rarely find unexplained cases > in the US skeptical literature.
RM--Oh, the poor babies! Then perhaps you should be lobbying the scientists to get them to delve through the CUFOS files and such to look at unexplained cases. Otherwise, I don't see what your point is. If you want skeptics' journals to spontaneously printing out unexplained mystery stories, I think you're in for a disappointment. Those journals mostly print the results of investigated cases, _when/if_ someone bothers to submit a properly-written study. If you want more such studies to be published, try submitting a few. How many of your case-study write-ups have been rejected for publication by Kendrick Frazier? Would you mind posting them? If you can't get them published in _SI_, maybe you'll send them to me so Chris Muir might publish them in _BASIS_, newsletter of Bay Area Skeptics.
Also, of interest is whether the claim above --- that skeptical Journals mostly print the results of investigated cases --- is accurate or not? As any writer knows, one of the first steps in getting published is to know the publication and the editorial direction of the publication. That requires reading the publication. Are skeptical journals interested in results of investigated cases or is their interest in another direction? I will attempt to answer that shortly.
RM--Somehow, however, I suspect that you have no such properly-written studies to submit, and are simply (once again) trying to tell us-all what to do.
I don't know if Emmanuel has anything prepared, but I thought I might help him if he has any such interest by posting an analysis of a skeptical publication so that Emmanuel might be better prepared to match any article he has in mind with the publication, namely SI, since it is one that is readily available to me and also one that Rick has suggested for Emmanuel to seek, but also readily available to most members of this list.
> EM--Okay, here I make the assumption that skeptics have the aim > to reduce the amount of (dangerous) nonsense that floats here and > there. If I'm wrong, correct me.
RM--In my view, skeptics are those interested in critically examining testable fringe-science/medicine claims of fact. I regard any crusading impulses as quaint, and not essential to the effort. This makes me unpopular with a moralising minority, but I don't particularly care, and haven't much regard for _their_ views.
The above view is one that I also share.

So, in order to answer the above questions to myself, see if what Rick Moen has said is accurate, and to help Emmanuel in his quest for a possible future career as a skeptical writer I have done the following analysis which I hereby share with you.
I used George M. Eberhart's "UFOs and the Extraterrestrial Contact Movement: A Bibliography" and volume 2 through volume 10, Fall 1985, of the Skeptical Inquirer as well as the initial volume 1 under the name of "The Zetetic". I stuck to these since Eberhart's bibliography stops in 1986. Eberhart subdivides the contents of his two volume bibliography into 158 categories. I originally found 104 UFO related entries attributed to SI. I verified these at the library to be what is in SI for the period covered. On a separate post, I will list them all for those interested. Also, since the titles of the articles provide a prospective writer with much information as to the editorial direction of the publication.
Eberhart Category Total Letters Psy Vibr. Balance
Abduction Cases 5 2 3 Animal Mutilations 4 1 3 Contactees after 52 1 1 * Crash/Retrievals 2 2 - General UFO 11 10 1 * " /Ufologists' attitude 1 1 * Gov/Military attitudes 11 4 7 * IFOs & Hoaxes 18 3 15 " /Public attitudes 1 1 * Investigative Methods 1 1 * Mystery disappearances 6 2 4 Nocturnal lights 1 1 " / UFOs on Radar 1 1 Physical trace cases 1 1 Public Attitudes 12 2 10 * Scientists Attitudes 2 2 - Tunguska event 1 1 * UFO conferences 5 5 * Ufologists' attitudes 11 2 1 8 * UFOs & Space Program 3 3 UFOs in Space - Mars 1 1 UFOs on Radar 3 2 1 UFOs,psychology,psychic 2 1 1 * ------------------------------------ Totals 104 19 15 70 37
I subtracted the letters to SI as well as the entries in the "Psychic Vibrations" column since those are simply rhetoric for the most part, but those entries are included in the list which I will post separately. Also, please notice that I have not included any book reviews in the above figures. Of interest might also be that I have excluded 12 entries in that period of time dealing with Marian apparitions, ancient astronauts, archaeoastronomy, megaliths in Europe, Pyramids in Egypt, a letter on anomalous artifacts and Nazca ground markings.
>From the above sample, what is the focus of this publication as it relates to the UFO phenomenon? Is it the results of investigated cases or something other? From the original 104 UFO related entries, 19 were letters, 15 were column oriented entries, 37 are in categories that do not relate to results of solved cases, 17 of which address the attitudes of the public, government, military and ufologists --- which leaves us with 33 article possibilities.
The three abduction articles deal with hypnosis, why not call the FBI, and profitable motives --- not cases solved.
The three mutilation articles has two solved cases.
The fifteen IFO/Hoaxes articles includes five on Soviet disinformation, one whose focus is CUFOS methodology, one whose focus is J. Allen Hynek, but the generalized category is IFO/hoaxes so we have fifteen for the sake of argument.
In the mystery disappearance articles we find another on the Soviets, a Bermuda Triangle article, and one on a pyramid, but I am not going to redo the numbers, so we have four for the sake of argument.
On the nocturnal lights we discover that Robert Sheaffer has solved the New Zealand UFO flap. Somebody should tell the New Zealanders about that as well as Dr. Richard Haines. But two cases for the sake of argument.
On the physical trace cases, I missed this article but I will for the sake of argument say that Klass solved another in two pages or less.
On the UFOs & Space categories, one deals with tabloid journalism, with three solved cases one of which is the Mars Face.
On the UFOs & Radar, Klass wonders what happened to them? No solved cases.
That amounts to 26 solved cases in the pages of SI over its first ten years of publication.

A budding writer also needs to know the average length of a proposed article. The majority of articles run to the short end three pages or less. Of interest might be the article lengths of solved case analyses.
Page Length 1 or 2 3 4 or more
Mutes 1 1 IFOs/Hoaxes 6 5 4* Mystery Disappear 1 3 Nocturnal Lights 1 1 Physical Traces 1 UFOs and Space 1 2 ----------------------------------- 9 7 11
So, If a writer wants to submit a solved case analysis to SI, it appears that the writer needs to tightly pack the background, the investigation, the methodology, the results, the conclusion and of course the references in 3 pages or less. This might explain the lack of bibliographical references in most articles. Also of interest might be that out of the four lengthy IFOs/hoaxes articles, one's focus was CUFOS, the other Dr. Hynek and not the cases themselves.
If a budding writer wants to write in the most prolific category dealing with attitudes and UFO conferences, the lengths are:
Page Length 1 or 2 3 4 or more
Gen/Ufologist att. 1 Gov/Military att. 4 1 2 IFO/Public att. 1 Public attitudes 8 1 1 Ufologists' att. 4 2 2 UFO conferences 2 - 3 Scientists' att. - - - ---------------------------------------- 16 5 9
There does not appear to be much difference in article lengths dealing with attitudes and conferences vrs. case analyses. I am surprised that in a publication with the word scientific in it, not one article focused on scientists' attitudes towards the UFO problem in its first ten years of publication.
Conclusions:
Unless you want to write a letter, or a column, focus on a short article three pages or less. The distribution of articles appear to be equally divided among case analyses and personalities in the UFO phenomenon with about 20% of the articles in other areas. One thing that is apparent is that the focus of this publication is not printing the result of investigated cases, but more of portraying a generalized skeptical attitude towards the UFO phenomenon. Due to the emphasis on short pieces, critical analysis might not be that important for publication.
This of course only covers the first ten years of this publication, it would be interesting to see if there has been a shift one way or another in the last seven years. I feel comfortable in predicting that it has not, since the editorship is still basically run by the same people and the prolific writers of this skeptics' magazine are still the same ones. The accompanying posts lists all of the items used in this report. A writer interested in publishing his/her work can surmise the slant of the publication by the titles employed.

Posted to the List by Richard A. Crowe, Ph.D.:
Over the weekend, I did a follow-up survey (after Ed Stewart) on the content of SI regarding UFOs and/or alien intelligence (SETI). Between the Fall 1985 issue and the Summer 1993 issue (over the time that I have been a subscriber to SKEPTICAL INQUIRER), there were 25 published articles on UFOs or SETI. For the purpose of this, I left out letters, Psychic Vibrations, and the News and Comment pieces. The articles have an average length of between 7 and 8 pages. Eight of the articles are investigations of cases (which might be considered "solved"), 8 dealt with analysis of government documents (including four on the MJ-12 papers, all written by Philip J. Klass), four dealt with assessment of alien abduction claims, three concerned SETI, and two others were more difficult to categorize. 9 of the 25 articles were written by Klass, with 1 by Robert Baker and 1 by James Oberg (consulting editors). Another short article was written by Donald Schmitt and Kevin Randle concerning a previous book review, with a very brief reply by Klass.
The average length is certainly much greater than 4 pages, and in particular, the page length is not dependent on the focus of the article. There are a significant number of articles devoted to investigatory work, and if one includes the MJ-12 papers analysis in this, the relative fraction is 12/25 (just short of 50%), by the standards that Ed Stewart applied in a previous post. I know through my own contact with Kendrick Frazier that very lengthy articles are discouraged (because of costs and because of the large number of submissions). This is true of most journals, in fact; since publication costs are typically $60-100 a page, it is not usually practical to write long treatises for a journal. A 7-10 page article should be adequate, even for a detailed investigation, if the writer is concise.

Thank you. I was hopping someone would do this. If appears that my survey might have produced slightly different results since I left the News and Comment pieces in, whereas you removed them from your survey. This would account for my figures showning shorter lenght pieces than yours.

Page length not dependent on article focus is what my survey also showed.

A slight increase over the first ten years. 40% to 50%.

If the list is not interested, I would be.
Thank you,
